- Berry Magdalena (Bixler), wife of George W. Berry, was born in Westmoreland County, Penn. April 6, 1813. In 1814 her parents emigrated to Knox County, Ohio; from there to Fairfield County in 1817; thence to Seneca County, Ohio in 1829. She was a great niece of the celebrated English Quaker and philanthropist, William Penn. Early in life she associated with the Church of Christ at Lisbon, then under the leadership of Rev. William Dowling. She was married March 8, 1833 at the age of 20 to George W. Berry. They built and lived in a log cabin near the site where Col. Crawford was burnt at the stake by Indians, until Oct. 28, 1838, at which time they moved to Kendallville, arriving there a few weeks later. Hotel accommodations were meager in those days and settlers were few, and they spent the first night in their covered wagon under the branches of an oak tree on the spot where the Boyer Opera House now stands. Later they moved into a log cabin east of the Moyer residence which was built and owned by her brother, Daniel, and after whom Bixler Lake was named. They resided here about one year, when a farm was purchased on the State Road leading west from Lisbon, which took the name of Berry's Corners from the fact that a mail carrier made this one of his stopover places on the mail route east and west. Here they resided until March 1862 when they sold this home and purchased another on the Old Plank Road near Avilla. In 1881 they, with their son, J. A. Berry, moved to Indian River, Mich. where they resided at the time of her husband's death, Sept. 24, 1883. About 2 years later she returned to Kendallville and made her home with her son, H. B. Berry until November 25, 1902 when she went to Wildwood, Mich. to reside with her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth E. West, where she died March 26, 1906 at the age of 92 years 11 month and 2 days. She had 3 sons and one daughter. John W. Berry preceded her in death. She was laid to rest on the hilltop of Oak Hill Cemetery overlooking Burt Lake. ^ 4-6-1906
