A year or so earlier a baby girl had been born but lived only a short time, dying from what was believed to be a sickness called "summer complaint". Another child was now expected (Clara Margaret) so they wanted to be nearer medical care. They stayed in the city until the fall of the year before returning to Bigfork.

After Elizabeth's death, William Benson and children Solomon, Elizabeth, and William returned to Ohio.

William's daughter Nancy and her husband Elijah Hurd had thier own household and remained in IA.
William's daughter Margaret and her husband Joseph Free had thier own household and remained in IA.
William's daughter Sarah and her husband George Miller do not appear in the 1856 Marion, IA census (as do Nancy and Elijah Hurd and Margaret and Joseph Free). For this reason one might wonder if they returned to OH with William. However, they had one son already, and the 1860 Marion, IA census indicates they had another son born in IA in 1856. Therefore I beleive they likely remained in IA and did not return to OH with William.

The move likely occurred between March (William purchased property from Alfred Rees in Dec 1855 the deed for which was not recorded until Mar 1856) and Oct 1856 (William's daughter Elizabeth and William Hyer were married 2 Nov 1856 in Ohio).

From The Glenwood Criterion:
We learn from Mr. George H. Davis, who was in Kirksville last Monday, that Mr. G.N. Dodson - who had a hay press - and another man were struck and literally killed by lightning during a storm there Monday. They were in a barn playing cards when the bolt descended and ended the game.

Indian River
Mrs. Elizabeth E. Berry West
The news of the demise of our only sister, Mrs. Elizabeth E. Berry West, which reached us last week brought sadness and grief to all of her relatives and friends in this section.
She passed away at her home in Fay, Oklahoma, Jan 17, 1914. Mrs. West came to this section in the year 1879 with her husband and settled on a homestead on section 2, Mentor Township, on the west banks of the Sturgeon River near what is called State Road Crossing. Two years later a post office was established called Diver post office, her husband W. P. West became its postmaster.
Mrs. West and her husband were among the earliest settlers in this part of Cheboygan County, and was known by all the pioneers in this section. A few years later her family went west settling in Oklahoma. She is survived by a husband and ten children. J. E. West of Ohioville, is the only son in this section and J. A. Berry of Indian River the only brother of a family of four children. She was a member of the Christian church and was very liberal in her views. She was a woman universally liked by all who knew her. She spent her whole life to the welfare and comfort of her family - she was a willing worker and always ready to do some kind act to make others happy.
Years pass by; her time on earth had come.
She was silently followed to her last resting place by a large circle of relatives and friends to the cemetery at Fay, Oklahoma, and there laid in the bosom of the earth, one whose whole life was pure and simple. She has entered upon that triumphant life which is more enjoyable than earthly life.

Kirsten Joy Moline Laney
September 3, 1968 - March 15, 2017

Obituary for Kirsten Joy Moline Laney
Kirsten Joy (Moline) Laney, 48, a resident of rural Underwood, died Wednesday, March 15, 2017, as a result of an accident while riding her horse near her Ranch home.

She was born on September 3, 1968, to James and Arlyne (Hanson) Moline in Pasadena, CA. As a child, the family moved to Fergus Falls where she attended Fergus Falls Public Schools and Hillcrest Academy. She then moved with her family to Bend, OR, and graduated from Mountain View High School in 1987. After returning to the Fergus Falls area, Kirsten received a degree in Computer Science from NDSCS.

On August 10, 1991, at Bethel Church in Fergus Falls, she married Kenneth Laney, her high school soul mate and love of her life. In 1996 she welcomed her son Kolton Reid and in 2000 her second son, Kade Carter.

Her education and work ethic brought her into management in telemarketing and on to district manager for Movie Gallery. Kirsten later became an employee of Ottertail Power. After several years there, she experienced a life changing health crisis which redirected her career path. During her recovery, she began to follow her passion, pursue her dream as influenced by her connection to Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch, Bend, OR. In pursuit of her dream, the family moved southeast of Underwood to establish Oakdale Korral Rescue Ranch, to pair rescued horses with children.

When Kirsten was in high school she enjoyed basketball, choir and band. She always enjoyed camping and traveling with her family as well as following her boys school and sports activities. She loved nature and animals and was compassionate in helping others. She recently found enjoyment in the Art & Sip events.

Kirsten was active in the Lakes Area Vineyard Church of Detroit Lakes where she loved to serve in many capacities, including children's ministry and small group meetings. She was tenacious, bold and passionate for Jesus.
