A.J. Rolston Dies Suddenly at Kirksville

Arthur James Rolston, 66 years old, a prominent business man of Kirksville, and brother of Allen Rolston, prosecuting attorney of Schuyler county, died suddenly shortly after 5 o'clock Sunday morning of a heart attack at his home in Kirksville.
He had been in his usual health attending to his business and farm interests until the last day of his life, going to his large farm north of Kirksville several times a week. On Saturday evening after being at the farm a short time, he told his son, Howard, that he did not feel well and returned home. Sunday morning he went to the bathroom where he fell to the floor. Mrs. Rolston heard a noise and thinking he had knocked something over, made an investigation. A physician was summoned but he had passed away before the physician or his son, Howard, arrived.
Mr. Rolston was born on a farm in Schuyler county, July 17, 1876, a son of Oliver P. and Leanna Rolston. He married Miss Ada Underwood, of Moulton, Iowa, on may 7, 1903, who survives him. He is also survived by his daughter, Mrs. Helene Howell, of Moberly, two sons, Edwin J. Rolston of the U.S. nave and now stationed at Lambert's field, St. Louis, and Howard E. Rolston, of near Kirksville. He has four grand children, Joanne and David Eugene Fisher and James and Anna Sue Rolston. also surviving are two brothers and three sisters, Attorney Allen and Albert Rolston, of Queen City, and Misses Edna Mae and Ida Rolston and Mrs. Alice Hunt, of Colorado.
Mr. Rolston united with the Christian church at Queen City in 1908, and had been actively engaged in church work ever since.
He had been a resident of Kirksville since 1924 and has been engaged in the law and farm loan business with his brother, Atty. Allen Rolston, at Queen City and this association was never completely dissolved.
Since going to Kirksville he had been actively engaged in church affairs, the Boy Scout movement, and many civic affairs. He was especially active in movements looking towards the betterment of social and moral welfare conditions and recently started a movement for a recreational program for the youth of Kirksville.
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Christian church conducted by the Rev. L. V. Freeman, assisted by the Rev. Perley Ling, of Queen City. Burial was in the Maple Hill cemetery. Music by the Mesdames Wagner, Ewing, Bohrer and Valentine.
Pallbearers were a. P. Funk, J. W. Liedorff, R. O. Yowell, W. F. Lewis, John Curry and Walter Beard.

156 Berry Magdalena (Bixler), wife of George W. Berry, was born in Westmoreland County, Penn. April 6, 1813. In 1814 her parents emigrated to Knox County, Ohio; from there to Fairfield County in 1817; thence to Seneca County, Ohio in 1829. She was a great niece of the celebrated English Quaker and philanthropist, William Penn. Early in life she associated with the Church of Christ at Lisbon, then under the leadership of Rev. William Dowling. She was married March 8, 1833 at the age of 20 to George W. Berry. They built and lived in a log cabin near the site where Col. Crawford was burnt at the stake by Indians, until Oct. 28, 1838, at which time they moved to Kendallville, arriving there a few weeks later. Hotel accommodations were meager in those days and settlers were few, and they spent the first night in their covered wagon under the branches of an oak tree on the spot where the Boyer Opera House now stands. Later they moved into a log cabin east of the Moyer residence which was built and owned by her brother, Daniel, and after whom Bixler Lake was named. They resided here about one year, when a farm was purchased on the State Road leading west from Lisbon, which took the name of Berry's Corners from the fact that a mail carrier made this one of his stopover places on the mail route east and west. Here they resided until March 1862 when they sold this home and purchased another on the Old Plank Road near Avilla. In 1881 they, with their son, J. A. Berry, moved to Indian River, Mich. where they resided at the time of her husband's death, Sept. 24, 1883. About 2 years later she returned to Kendallville and made her home with her son, H. B. Berry until November 25, 1902 when she went to Wildwood, Mich. to reside with her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth E. West, where she died March 26, 1906 at the age of 92 years 11 month and 2 days. She had 3 sons and one daughter. John W. Berry preceded her in death. She was laid to rest on the hilltop of Oak Hill Cemetery overlooking Burt Lake. ^ 4-6-1906 Bixler, Magdalena (I4775)

172 About U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1880
Each of the U.S. Federal Censuses from 1850-1880 included a mortality schedule enumerating the individuals who had died in the year previous to the census year. Because each of the censuses from 1850-1880 began on June 1, "previous year" refers to the 12 months preceding June 1, or June 1 (of the previous year) to May 31 (of the census year). In addition, each individual is linked to the census image on which they appear.
